Grateful Dead 在 60 年代中期的舊金山崛起，動輒長達四、五個小時的馬拉松式 
演唱會，充滿了長篇即興的器樂演奏，為他們贏得成千上萬的死忠歌迷，Grateful 
Dead 幾乎成為嬉皮世代的同義詞。 
 
他們的歌迷自動形成社群組織，自稱「死頭族」（Deadheads）， 開著車上山下海 
，跟著Grateful Dead 四處巡迴演唱，就著震耳欲聾的迷幻搖滾，叼著大麻、穿著 
水染的長袍翩翩起舞。「死頭族」喜歡用手提設備錄下每一場演出，然後跟其他的 
「死頭」交換。
